MOMO & Tik Tok
Posted on Thursday 28th February - Mrs G Fox
I am writing to you about an issue that has come to my attention. There is a new video platform craze known as ‘MOMO’. This character appears on the screen during what initially appear to be innocent videos. This character sets children dares and these can be very dangerous. These include threats that if the child informs parents/carers then it will come into their room at night and kill them and their friends.
It is really important that you monitor your child’s use of YouTube and other video platforms. One child was exposed to this when they innocently watched a video about Roblox (one that he had watched the day before with no issues; but this version had been edited to include this MOMO character). The dares that are given range from being asked to do very dangerous things such as turn the gas on in the kitchen to committing suicide.
Alongside this letter, I am sending you what parents need to know about MOMO and the TIK TOK app that is popular amongst our children. Any information related to MOMO is also filtered on our school system. Further information about what you can do to keep your child safe online can be found on: www.nationalonlinesafety.com.
The Safeguarding page on our school website also has lots of useful information for parents. Please let me know if you need any further information.
